About the MRCS Part B Exam

The MRCS (Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons) Part B examination is a standardized assessment used to evaluate the clinical and practical skills of medical professionals who are pursuing a career in surgery. It is one of the components required for gaining membership into the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in the United Kingdom and several other countries. The examination is designed to assess a candidate’s ability to apply their surgical knowledge and skills in a clinical context.

The MRCS Part B examination takes the form of objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). The OSCE comprises of a series of stations in a circuit around which the candidates rotate. During each station the candidate is required to undertake a defined task e.g. perform a practical procedure in simulation, clinical examination or interpret an anatomical figure.

There are 18 stations in the MRCS Part B examination. Each station lasts 10 minutes (with 1 minute of reading, 8 minutes to complete the task and 1 minute to rotate). The stations are grouped into two broad categories:

  • Knowledge (there are 8 knowledge stations)
    • 3 Surgical anatomy stations
    • 2 Surgical pathology stations
    • 3 applied surgical science stations and critical care stations (Physiology)
  • Skills (there are 10 skill stations)
    • 4 communication skill stations (2 history taking stations, 1 giving information to a patient and 1 giving information to a colleague).
    • 6 clinical and procedural skills stations

The pass mark for the MRCS Part B examination is different for every test (complete circuit).

Using information from the structured mark sheets for each station out of 20, and the global rating for each station, a pass mark will be calculated out of 160 for Knowledge and 180 for Skills. Candidates must pass each of the knowledge and skills components to obtain a pass.

The highest pass rate for the MRCS Part B examination is 75%.

You are allowed four attempts at the MRCS Part B examination. In addition, you have 7 years from passing Part A to complete Part B.
